North Gwent Cardiac Rehabilitation and Aftercare Charity

The North Gwent Cardiac Rehabilitation and Aftercare Charity (NGCRAC) was founded over 25 years ago by Dr. Jacky Miles (MBE), lead nurse for heart failure and cardiac rehabilitation research.

The mission is to provide support, education and rehabilitation to those within the local Monmouthshire and Blaenau Gwent communities who have suffered with their heart health. Charity supported community exercise classes provide ongoing support and encouragement to restore and rebuild health and well-being.

Can you imagine suffering a heart attack or being told you have heart failure and receiving no support? The isolation and worry of living with the aftermath of a cardiac event can be frightening. This is why the work the charity does to help healing hearts with their long-term recovery is so important; it can give people the confidence, independence and reassurance to live their lives to the fullest, as well as the opportunity to meet fellow local people who understand what they’re going through.

After a cardiac event the NHS provide an 8 week rehabilitation programme for all patients; this is called ‘Phase 3’ of cardiac rehabilitation. Once this has been completed patients can be referred to partake in the ‘Phase 4’ community classes. Spouses or family members may also take the classes with a referral from their GP.

If you have suffered a cardiac event and are interested in attending a class please speak to the cardiac rehab team about a referral or feel free to contact us for more information and support.

In 2013, The North Gwent Cardiac Rehabilitation and Aftercare Charity partnered with the Abergavenny Festival of Cycling becoming their official event charity - the festival is a staple event in both Welsh cycling and the local community. In 1991 festival organiser Bill Owen suffered a heart attack and was one of the first patients to undertake the charities rehabilitation programme.

“This charity was a great help to me personally after my heart attack and I am very pleased we can help them in our way” - Bill Owen, Abergavenny Chronicle 2013

The charity are always on the lookout for fun and exciting fundraising ideas so please get in touch if you would like more information on how to support or volunteer with us.
