Beyond Limits

Arthritis Care’s vision is of a world where people affected by arthritis can lead full and active lives. We aim to fulfil this vision by ensuring all people living with arthritis and their families receive the support and information to live well with arthritis, and have their voices heard.

Arthritis is too often overlooked and underestimated. We want to change this so that arthritis gets the attention it deserves and more people know how Arthritis Care can help them. With an estimated 600 children living with juvenile arthritis in Wales our Beyond Limits project aims to provide a range of support activities to young people living across south, mid and west Wales, helping them to take control of their condition, raise their aspirations and dramatically improve their future life prospects.

Our programme is aligned to, but independent of, University Hospital of Wales paediatric rheumatology clinical team and also works alongside satellite hospitals across mid and west Wales.

The programme will provide information provision and emotional support, access to specialist helpline, regular newsletters detailing activities, issue based workshops including pain management, transition, sleep training, and sex and relationships. As the project develops it will provide activities to reduce isolation including family days, friendship groups, activity weekends and secure groups on social media.

Children and families will help shape the programme through a dedicated Forum and by volunteering on the project.

Project Aims

For children and young people living with arthritis:

  • To reduce the isolation
  • To increase self-confidence and self-esteem
  • To improve their optimism about the future
  • To listen to, and respond to their experience of arthritis

For parents and families:

  • To have a greater understanding and knowledge about their child’s arthritis
  • To receive information and support from Arthritis Care and develop peer support network opportunities

By the end of March 2020 we envisage that a total of 225 young people between the age of 10 and 18 years living with arthritis will have benefited from the project.
