The Acorn Centre, Abergavenny
Monmouthshire's Children's Centre is called The Acorn Centre and is based at Deri View Primary School in Abergavenny. The Acorn Centre aims to improve the health, education and the emotional development of young children and families through an integrated approach. It also aims to work with the whole family to improve thier life chances and ultimately reduce child poverty.

Services at The Acorn Centre:
Buzzy Bees Creche is run by The Acorn Project and Provides Flying Start free part-time childcare for 2 -3 year olds in the mornings and supports courses and parenting programmes in the afternoons.
Butterflies Playgroup offers Flying Start free part-time childcare in the mornings for 2 - 3 year olds. The setting also offers places for those not eligible for Flying Start childcare at a cost of £6 per session. THere is also a wrap around service available.
Deri View Dragons Out of School Club runs after school care and holiday care in the centre for 3 - 11year olds. There are a variety of activities and games available.
Deri View Nursery is a local authority nursery offering Early Education for children the term following their third birthday. All activities and learning opportunities in the nursery involve hands on play and are planned to allows for the intellectual, imaginative, creative and physical developments.
The Acorn Centre is working closely with the Three Counties Play Project to look to provide local play opportunities. Flying Start and The Acorn Project run language and play courses at the centre.
Parenting courses run at the Acorn Centre and are suitable for parents with children aged 0 - 11. Flying Start and The Acorn Project run 3 different programmes - The Incredible Years Infant Prgramme (birth - 9 months), Toddler Programme (9 months - 3 years) and the Basic Programme (3 - 8 years).
The Centre runs Language and Play groups throughout the year for parents and their children. It runs a ladybird baby group for the babies 0 - 12 months, Walkers and Talkers for 1 - 2s and Drawers and Explorers for the 2 -3s.
Adult Learning Support:
The Acorn Centre has an Adult Learning Advisor who can help with basic skills, confidence, budgeting, CV writing etc... in groups or on a one-to-one basis. The Centre also provides training courses run by external organisations such as Child Protection, First Aid, Food Hygiene and more.
Creature Comforts Cafe is open 9am - 4.30pm Monday to Friday. Anyone is welcome to pop in and have a cip of coffee/tea or hot chocolate.
Flying Start Health Visitors are based at the centre. They work in the local area and support all families with children 0 - 5 years of age.
Computer/Internet Access is available to anyone to access - whether you want to update your CV, surf the internet etc.
Deri View school has a beautiful forest garden which the school, local settings and The Acorn Centre use. A gardening club meet every week to help maintain the garden.
The Corny Carrot Food Co-Operative runs weekly from the Centre offering fresh fruit, vegetables and salad at a low cost.
The Credit Union runs a drop-in point weekly for the local community enabling people to save safely and even apply for affordable, low cost, small loans.
